Tahoe
Had a great bike ride in Lake Tahoe this past weekend. With the help of my friends, I raised $30,300 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I was the 7th largest fund raiser nationwide. I was joined in Tahoe by Amy, Mary and Elle. We had a ball! Even rented a speedboat to go visit Vikingholm in Emerald Bay. I will post pictures later.

A Hard Week
Well a week ago I quit my job with nothing lined up! Whew, that is a rush! But everything happens for a reason and this happened because I was just not happy where I was at. I am very lucky to have so many friends in the mortgage business who are willing to help me find a new, better gig.
Then, on Wednesday I went out for a ride and I was only about 2 miles from my house and I was riding with only one hand on the bars and the wind caught me and took me down. In all my years of riding and racing, I do not think I have gone down so hard as I did on Wednesday. Luckily, only damage was the brand new bar tape (about 50 miles on it!) and the brand new kit from Pig Boy, that I was doing the maiden ride.
Team in Training - I have raised $26,000, which is not bad but a little less than my goal of $50,000. The ride is next weekend. I am not in as good as shape as I should be for the ride.
Patrick & Mary's last day of school was yesterday. They are excited for a summer swimming playing.

2007 Team In Training Fund Raising
Come June once again, I will be riding my bike around Lake Tahoe as part of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training program. I will ride in honor of my friend Allison Bishop and all the people impacted by cancer that you have shared with me. Unfortunately, I add to my list of honorees this year Brenda Sampson, a co-worker at both Indymac Bank and Principal. Brenda died of multiple myeloma – a blood born cancer this past August.
With your help last year, I was able to raise over $34,500 towards finding a cure for blood cancers! This year, I have set my goal at $50,000! A very large number indeed!
As a result of your support of my fund raising effort over the past few years, I was invited to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s International SCOR Award Gala in San Diego. At this event, the Society awarded four $6.25 million dollar research grants to the “cream of the crop” of the international cancer researchers. I had the opportunity to meet people such as Dr. Brian Druker of the Oregon Health & Sciences University (http://www.ohsu.edu/ohsuedu/newspub/releases/120606gleevec.cfm), who developed the wonder drug Gleevec. Gleevec is a molecularly targeted treatment for chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) – a cancer that, before Gleevec, had at least an 85% death rate. Gleevec is a drug that uses cancer cells to attack other cancer cells found in a body while not destroying healthy cells. The research to find Gleevec was funded by the dollars that people like you have given to my fund raising effort! Isn’t remarkable that people are living today because of your generous donations! Something else you may want to know is Dr. Druker himself is a Team in Training member. He runs marathons to raise money for the Society!
I also met Dr. Carolyn Felix of the Philadelphia Children’s Hospital (http://www.med.upenn.edu/camb/faculty/cgc/felix.html). Dr. Felix is a pediatric oncologist – she works with newborn babies who have cancer. Besides seeing patients, Dr. Felix also is leading a team of researchers to develop targeting therapies for infant leukemias (specifically MLL - Mixed Lineage Leukemia; Myeloid Lymphoid Leukemia). Traditionally chemotherapy has been used to cure blood born cancers in infants, but the impact of the chemo on the baby can be toxic. Dr. Felix is working to develop cures that are not toxic to children.
The most amazing experience I had at the Gala was that the doctors and researchers I met treated me like I was the “Rock Star”! They felt people like me should be honored because we help raise the money that funds their amazing research! In fact Dr. Druker said that while in the past being diagnosed with a blood born cancer was like a death sentence, today there is hope because of the generous donations you make! Dr. Druker, Dr. Felix and the other researchers have made tremendous advancement because of the dollars you have given, that the Society now predicts in five to ten years blood born cancers will be able to be treated like chronic diseases! That is incredible!
So once again, I am asking you again to contribute to my fund raising effort to help the amazing researchers and doctors who are diligently working to find a cure for all cancers with the support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. As I mentioned, I have set my goal this year to raise $50,000! A lofty goal, but with your help it can be achieved. As in the past, I will personally make a $5,000 donation and pay for my own travel costs so you can be assured so that all money you donate will go 100% to the research to find a cure.

So Pig Boy (he would say he is just Pig now, but he will always be Pig Boy to me!) says I am a slacker for not keeping my Blog up-to-date. Man, that Dude has too much time on his hands! He should spend it riding that new fancy 29'er he has!
Lets see, since I last wrote, I helped my friend Shawn get Platinum at El Tour De Tucson, celebrated Christmas (got to love being able to be in the pool on Christmas Day) and been to Holland to see a Six Day race in Rotterdam with Lang and BoBo (Mark Wiltse).
Ever seen a Derny Race? What a hoot. Six guys motor pacing for 60 laps behind scooters! Just wild. When I get some time I will put some pictures from the trip on the Blog.
In family news - Patrick (12) moves on to the Regional Spelling Bee. If he can get top 3, he goes to DC.

The Tour of Scottsdale
You know, riding your bike only two days a week is not a good way to train for something like The Tour of Scottsdale. It is a 70 mile "Ride" - yah right, when you have CAT 1's doing the deal, it is a race. Oh yeah, and they give prize money. I went out just to have fun. I tried staying with my friend Joe Z (TNT Coach) and got dropped after about 7-8 miles. Then rode with his wife, Karen (TNT Coach). Stayed in a big group with her until I blew coming up the Fountain Hill side of Shea. From there I just motored in by myself. It may not have been a great day of riding, but the weather was outstanding so I can't complain! And I got to spend the afternoon with Patrick & Mary.
Busy week. Off to Sacramento tomorrow and fly back on Tuesday. Which happens to be my B-Day! Get a crown put on one of my teeth. What a drag it is getting old. Then, on Wednesday, Patrick, Mary and I go to San Diego for a mini vacation. Going to hit Sea World, head up to LA to see the American Girl Store (for Mary) and the Zoo. Then on Friday night I am wearing my new Tux to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Gala at the Hotel Del. I am receiving the Chairman's Citation for my fund raising. Saturday the three of us fly back to Phoenix, where I drop them off with their Mom and I fly on to Chicago to for the Mortgage Bankers Association National Convention and boondoggle! Saturday night I am going to see Tea Leaf Green with my former Principal Co-Workers (and Deadheads) Rich and Doug. Looking forward to that!

Some Bike Pics!
This is Team AZ at the 2006 America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride. This is a 100 mile ride around Lake Tahoe. 80% of the participants are raising funds to find a cure for blood born cancers for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This picture was taken overlooking Emerald Bay. A beautiful location!

So sometimes Lang does not always act his age! This is the result of our first attempt to ride up Four Peaks. Lang takes off like some wild ass 45 year old and gets a little wide on a downhill switchback. Unfortunately, he got sucked into some soft sand and went over the bars! Not good! I think it was the Trip that Pig got renamed Cactus Ass! Guess why!

My buddy Pig Boy - www.theswineking.blogspot.com told me I had to create a Blog. So here it is! I haven't figured out how to post pictures yet. Oh, and he always reminds me, he is no longer a boy, he is a man, so it is now appropriate to just call him Pig.
Today is Patrick's 12th Birthday. Happy Birthday Bubby! He is in Vegas with his Mom and Grandparents. They went to the Shark exhibit at Mandalay Bay. I shared sushi with him on Thursday night before he left.
I did a 3 hour road ride with my friend Joe Z through Rio Verde, Fountain Hills, and Scottsdale. Joe and his wife Karen are the Coaches for my Team in Training Group. I am mentoring two riders as they raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. They will be riding 109 miles at the el Tour de Tucson in November. Our TNT Group rode 63 miles on Saturday.
Mary turn's 9 on October 10th.
We are going to San Diego on Oct 18th (day after my 14th birthday!) for fall break. We will do Sea World on Wedneday, drive to LA on Thursday for Universal Studios and American Girl Store and then the SD Zoo on Friday. Friday night I have been invited to a Gala put on by the National Leukemia Society where they will hand out their research grants and recognize large donors and fund raisers. On Saturday the kids will fly home and I will continue on to Chicago for the Mortgage Bankers Association's National Convention.
